The MacBook family of Apple Computers consists of the MacBook, MacBook Pro, and the MacBook Air. They are designed to deliver high-performance computing on the go, combining power and mobility to give their owners a full-featured computer away from the desk. They operate wherever you go, and handle whatever you do. MacBook, the consumer-focused notebook among the three, was designed and manufactured for the education markets. It sports entry-level specs and an affordable price range. In July of 2011, the MacBook was discontinued in favor of the MacBook Air. With its all-flash storage and lightweight durable design, the MacBook Air is Apple’s entrant to the ultraportable division of laptop computers. It is available in 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch models and weighs as little as 3lbs. But the MacBook Air boasts of the same high level of performance as those in laptops twice its size. MacBook Pro, on the other hand, is at the high-end of MacBook computers. It has high-performance processors, powerful graphics, and extended battery life. It is also equipped with high-quality screen and sturdy unibody construction, making it a favorite among professionals needing a powerful computer wherever they go. |

Reviewed by HD Mencken (2011-08-23) The 2011 MacBook Air doesn't disappointI've been putting off an upgrade on my MacBook because I was waiting for this refresh of the MacBook Air to arrive. I added RAM and included an SSD on my MacBook, just so it would remain in top shape. And I'm so glad I was able to wait it out. The MacBook Air is so satisfactory in the past few day that I used it that I think it was money and time well spent.
The MacBook Air is amazingly thin and gorgeous. That's the first thing you'll notice. Then when you touch it, the laptop feels solid and very polished. Open it and that's where the magic piles up.
To begin with, the boot up time on the MacBook Air is one of the fastest I've seen. It almost feels like those always-on devices like smart phones and tablets. Because of the SSD and new Intel processor, my unit of the MacBook Air is really quick. "featherweight," that's the term they have in boxing for those quick and light fighters.
I just wish SSDs would be so common that they start to get cheaper and the capacity increases. Right now, the MacBook Air that I got, with its 256GB SSD, sorely lacks the room to accommodate my media files. But this being my second computer, this limitation is not that big of a deal. |

Reviewed by Johnny Orson (2011-08-10) Best upgrade I could ever hope forThis MacBook Pro replaces my trusty old eMac. I've been wanting to get an iMac instead, but choose a portable MacBook Pro all the same because it looks capable of desktop-level computing even though it is a laptop. Of course, specs-wise the 2011 iMac is better than the 2011 MacBook Pro and it wouldn't be fair or sensible to compare the two. I must just say that the 2.2GHz clocked by the 17-inch MacBook Pro is really really fast and makes for a very very nice computer experience.
Aside from speed, what I like about the MacBook Pro is the screen. It's the best screen I've ever seen. MacBooks, at least the newer models, seem to have a knack for packing in lots of pixels in a very limited space. The result is a great-looking display to watch movies and play games, and a clean-looking display to show your opened programs. You can leave five or so programs and resize them and they still will fit in the screen.
Last, and the most important, is the battery life. It's good to know the MacBook Pro can see you through the day. I've owned an iPod, iPhone, and an iPad, and I tell you they have nice battery life. Same with this MacBook Pro, battery life is exponentially good. |

Reviewed by Lilli Francis (2011-08-17) MacBook Air dual-core i5, 128GB Flash StorageThe MacBook Air is a nice package overall. It feels sturdy despite its size and weight. The brushed aluminum finish looks classy and solid. And the unibody enclosure makes it convenient to carry around without having to worry about breaking the laptop, which happens to me often enough with other notebooks of plastic finish.
One of the concerns I have about the MacBook Air is the lack of an optical disc drive. It is not often that I use the optical disc drive of my old laptop, but it would be nice to have this option. In the end, though, I figured I might not have a use for a CD or DVD afterall.
As for the OS, well it's a Mac. It's good OS-wise through and through.
For the design, I give it a 10. It's one of the best-looking laptop I have ever seen. The backlit keyboard is nice. The well-spaced trackpad is very convenient to use. And the 13-inch size is appropriate for an ultraportable.
Inside the MacBook Air, the i5-SSD configuration is amazingly fast! It tends to warm up sometimes, I noticed, but a simple reboot fixes the problem. Lastly, the battery life is super long and the battery meter is dependable. |
