Reviewed by Michael Donne (2011-09-05) 15.4" MacBook Pro quad-core Intel Core i71st time to switch to a Mac. It's great so far. The OS looks new to me, being a longtime PC user, but I'm confident I'll get the hang of it pretty quick. It's easier in OS X to navigate through the system, if you ask me, though as I said it take some getting used to for me.
The main reason I bought a Mac is the hardware. And I'll tell you, it's phenomenal. Never seen a laptop so beautifully built and at the same time so powerful and convenient to use.
The design, as with everything Apple, is very polished and nice. I have an iPhone 3G and an iPad1 and this the 2011 MacBook Pro lives up to the tradition of great design and convenience of use. The design is so simple it's hard to put it down. Even if you do computing work for long hours and at any work station, the MacBook Pro offers a well-designed machine: unibody finish, backlit keyboard, organized ports, etc.
As far as performance goes, I'm pretty happy with the specs I got in this 15-inch MBP. It has a quad-core i7 with 4GB of RAM. I'm sure this will last me 10 years or so and it would still be capable. If not I could always try adding RAM. But the i7 is, to me, solid and formidable already. |

Reviewed by Stephen Lee (2011-08-31) Best Choice Among Current MacBooksGot the 15-inch MacBook Pro and so far so good. All things considered it looks to me like it has the most bang for the buck of the different MacBooks and among laptops generally. It has decent storage, enough processing power, and got a nice screen real estate that is somewhere between portable and multimedia powerhouse.
The 15 inches of screen looks good with Lion. The full screen capability of the Lion OS packs more pictures and text on the screen, making it seem larger. It's a nice screen to watch movies, browse the Web, and play high-res games. The glossy display is very vivid. It packs lots of pixels in the tiny screen. It's fantastic.
The design, on the other hand, is typically Apple. This 2011 MacBook Pro looks very polished and comfortable to operate. Nothing much, though, is different from the last generation of MacBook Pro before this. Maybe Apple thinks it's perfect already. Although if you ask me, a numpad would have been nice. Also a physical button for the volume and wireless connections for easy control. |

Reviewed by Ed Schwimmer (2011-08-23) Huge leap for the MacBook Pro indeedThe 2011 MacBook Pro is of the finest laptops I've ever seen. The speed is unmatched among other notebooks and rivaled only by the MacBook Air. But, then again, the MacBook Air uses an SSD, which accounts for the speed. For a laptop using an HDD, the MacBook Pro is a cut above the rest.
Design-wise, the MacBook Pro is good looking and and the aluminum finish is extraordinarily classy. The organization of the ports on the left side of the chassis is very convenient, as it allows you to have only one side of the desk cluttered with wires and connecting devices. Nothing new on the design, because really, how else could the MacBook Pro design get any better?
Also, been wanting to upgrade to Lion. It looks good and iPad-like, which appeals to me. Never got around to installing it, though. There may be other reviews of the MacBook Pro running it already, but this is not it.
As for connectivity, the Thundrbolt port looks promising. It's kind of bring the advantages of high-volume data transfer via RAID devices. I find it very useful since I work with large files and large-format data. Of course, there is only perhaps 2 or 3 devices compatible with Thunderbolt. Hopefully, this option in a MacBook Pro would be fully utilized. |
