Reviewed by Peggy Johnson (2011-09-05) Apple Mac mini Dual-Core Intel Core i5 2.3GHzThis is a capable computer. Programs load fast on the Mac mini and it is easy to move from one app to another. Plus I find it quick to search for files and other documents. Not sure if this has something to do with the hardware or the software, but I'll take it.
The OS X Lion is amazing. I read that some programs are incompatible with it. But iWork and of course iLife run well in it. These are the programs that I need anyway. The new features of the OS like full screen and the new app launcher look iPad-like. For me it is a good thing. It simplifies things in the system and it looks good too.
Also appreciate the small size of the Mac mini. It's nice to have it very portable and easy to install when I need to use it in our house as well as in my flower shop. This way I get to save on buying just one computer. And a notch more powerful computer at that than say a laptop.

Reviewed by Den19 (2011-08-30) Mac mini 2.3GHz + Acer 21.5inMy first Mac. Came to it from 10+ years using Linux PCs (so I may not have a typical perspective). I had always thought of Macs as overpriced and/or underpowered but having nice software and underneath the glitter being basically a Unix box. So this time seeing the price of the Mini when it was time to upgrade I thought I'd give it a try.
I got the $681 combo with the 21.5in Acer monitor and a MacAlly keyboard and mouse for $20. I also ordered 8GBytes from Crucial for about $55, so the complete system was $756 (later added a Macally camera for Skype and Facetime for another $25 or so). A competitive price for the system (not cheap but competitive). I have had it for a few weeks now and use it for email, web, writing, organizing photos, minor editing of home movies and some computationally intensive tasks and graphics for work (computer simulations and plotting). All the Gnu programs I used are available in Macports. I find performance quite acceptable for what I do including 3D graphics under X (and much faster than my previous machine).
I found some things about OS X annoying but changing preferences, getting a few public domain programs from the web like KeyRemap4Macbook, and time have taken care of nearly all my issues. Of course, in addition to the annoyances there are many nice features to OS X.
Coming from Linux the way OS X finds and handles drivers is a joy. The hardware quality is excellent. The only downside is the relatively slow disk but that hasn't been a problem for me. All in all I have been extremely pleased with my purchase and have bought 2 more; one for my wife and one for my office at work. My use and needs are not typical but for what I do this is a very good, cost effective machine.

Reviewed by Marvin James (2011-08-25) Mac mini: Good for computing, great for multimediaThe Mac mini is not a full-brown computer. It has no optical disc drive, which is nice to have, actually, but you won't probably need that much. The removal of the ODD from the unit gave it a few extra space, which Apple used to sort of soup up the Mac mini.
The result? A fine machine that is streamlined, cheap compared to other desktops of the same class, and convenient to carry around because of it's small footprint. It's like having an external disk drive that carries all your files and OS and does not tie you up to a desk.
As far as my usage goes, I'm pretty satisfied with the Mac mini. I use it for a little browsing and a lot of iWork apps, Numbers mostly. Hooking it up with an Apple display, the result is amazing. Spreadsheets look nice and the unit is utterly capable of displaying files that you won't lose yourself going through the document.
I find the Mac mini to be a convenient multimedia center. I plug it in to our HDTV and I could watch my downloaded movies, streams, and music. It's a good purchase and definitely worth it.
