Reviews of the Challengers |

| Motorola XOOM Review by Jamison Cush 3/10/2011 | Can the MOTOROLA Xoom possibly live up to the hype? It was dubbed an iPad killer before anyone got his or her hands on it. It was priced $800 at launch, making it more expensive than a comparable iPad. The folks behind the Droid smartphone make it, and the Droid was arguably the first Android handset to rival the iPhone. It is also the first tablet to feature an operating system developed by Google specifically for tablets. Build & Design There is very little tablet makers can do to distinguish their devices from the rest of the heap, but Motorola does its best to stick out, with slight design tweaks that work both for and against it. The Xoom is an all-black tablet with rounded edges and a slightly textured and rubberized back that splits about a quarter of the way down from the top. The upper portion is slightly smoother and more “rubbery” than the bottom portion. We found the Xoom back preferable to the all-plastic back of the Samsung Galaxy Tab base model (not the Verizon Tab, which had small rubber bullets) and Apple iPad. Compared to the available competition, the Xoom is just easier to hold, and the back shrugs off fingerprints well. | |
 | Galaxy Tab review: Android hitchhiking its way to tablet success By Ryan Paul | Last updated 2 months ago | The Samsung Galaxy Tab is one of the first high-end Android tablets from a mainstream hardware vendor. Available with 3G connectivity from a wide range of carriers, the Tab is arguably the vanguard of the legion of Android tablets that are expected to arrive in the coming year. Samsung has delivered an intriguing product with some compelling characteristics, but Android itself hasn't been fully tailored for the tablet form factor yet. The Tab has some unique software customizations that smooth out some of the rough edges and offer a more tablet-friendly experience than stock Android, but it's not quite enough to make it a true iPad rival. You can think of it as a dress rehearsal for the next-generation of Android tablets that are slated to arrive in 2011 with Honeycomb, the next iteration of Google's mobile operating system. In this review, we'll look at what the Tab does right and what it does wrong with the aim of setting a baseline for the kind of software experience that we expect an Android tablet to deliver. We will be looking primarily at the software and how it performs for tasks like Web browsing, e-mail, and multimedia consumption. (Because there are so many Android tablets about to hit the market, we didn't feel it was worthwhile to focus too closely on the specifics of the Tab hardware. What we're really after here is a first look at the Android-on-a-tablet experience, with some more focused looks at specific Samsung tweaks. | | BlackBerry PlayBook Review By Jonathan S. Geller April 13, 2011 |
| The BlackBerry PlayBook isn’t just the first tablet out of Research In Motion — it’s the first product to emerge from the company’s new do-or-die strategy. The PlayBook combines and showcases the underlying fabric that will set RIM up for the next 10 years. With RIM rumored to have only started working on the PlayBook within the last 10-12 months, is RIM’s tablet a true, viable competitor in the tablet space? I’ve been using a PlayBook for more than a week now, and I have to say… the PlayBook definitely surprised me in several ways. Hit the break for my full review of RIM’s upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. The BlackBerry PlayBook’s hardware is very well put together. The 7-inch tablet features a smaller screen size for those not interested in the 9 or 10-inch alternatives, and this makes the PlayBook much more portable in my opinion. It has a great weight to it; not too heavy and not too light — it feels like a substantial and quality product when you hold it. Other things I like are the soft-touch rubberized finished on the entire unit, save for the thin brushed gun metal frame around the display. Both textures work well together and they add to the feeling that you’re holding something worth spending $499.99 on (base 16GB model). Those used to Research In Motion’s old ways will be pretty shocked with the BlackBerry PlayBook’s hardware specifications. This is a whole new chapter in RIM’s history, and the company is coming out swinging. The PlayBook features a screaming 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel rear camera, a 3-megapixel front-facing camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 1080p HD video playback with an HDMI-out port, a 3.5mm headset jack and a microphone, all wrapped up in a super sleek 10mm-thin package. The PlayBook’s 7-inch display is beautiful, and the 1024 x 600 resolution packs a lot of pixels into a tight space. Colors are rich and vibrant, and black levels seem quite good, as do with viewing angles. | | iPad 2 Review by Lisa Grade March 12, 2011 | The iPad really needs no introduction: it quickly became the world’s favorite slate tablet. Of course, that wasn’t hard since consumer slate tablets were a rarity at the time and most of them ran full Windows, an OS not really optimized for touch-only input. Fast forward 11 months and Apple owns approximately 73% of the market (they’d had a higher percentage for several months but the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7” Android tablet came out in November 2010 and grabbed some market share). Additional Android competitors are just now letting loose with their offerings, some of which boast better specs than the original iPad. Enter the iPad 2, an evolutionary product that keeps the specs competitive with a 1GHz dual core A5 CPU, double the RAM of the original iPad and a Verizon 3G version that accompanies the AT&T 3G model. Though it still doesn’t boast the highest specs (that award currently goes to the Motorola Xoom 10.1” tablet with a higher resolution display, a gig of RAM and a free 4G LTE upgrade coming), specs aren’t everything. The iPad runs the popular, intuitive and familiar iOS for a user experience that’s hard to beat, at least for non-techie types. If you can use an iPhone or iPod Touch, you can use the iPad 2. There are 65,000 tablet-optimized apps on iTunes, so you’ll never go hungry for software. The base price for a WiFi-only 16 gig model remains at $499, making it price competitive with other tablets. In fact, this is one of the few times Apple’s product is actually less expensive than the competition’s. | |
