Reviewed by John Murphy(2011-09-05) This has been one of my best purchasesThe MacBook Air is a great computer. Maybe not a great "all-around" computer but it is great at what it can do. It doesn't have an optical disc, or a big enough hard drive. But the SSD, although with lower capacity than the cheaper HDD, is fast and very reliable. It wakes up in seconds, I kid you not. It is responsive and computing is a breeze and very convenient. On the design aspect of the computer, the MacBook Air is of the prettiest laptops I have ever seen. It's got a polished look that projects class. You will know just by the look of the MacBook Air that it is some sort of a specialized computer meant to enhance the computing experience we all are used to. Also, the backlit keyboard is very much appreciated. I never really got it why Apple removed it from the previous version of the Air. Thank god they returned it. If you ask me, a real ultraportable like the MacBook Air has to have those backlit keys so it can be used properly even in poorly lit coffee shops and in the balcony of your house at night. As for performance, computing in the MacBook Air is a breeze, as I have said. It is quick to launch apps and switch between apps. It is even faster than a MacBook Pro when browsing in Safari or listening to iTunes, or working on files in iWorks. |

Reviewed by Alan Mefford(2011-08-30) 11.6" MacBook AirMine is the standard upgrade 1.6 GHZ, 4 GB memory, 128 GB storage. For what I do, surfing the web, e-mails, word processing and spread sheets, this seemed the right one. I had an opportunity to play with the 11" and 13" units before ordering and knew I wanted the 11".
From what I had read in reviews, I decided I was not concerned whether I got the faster Samsung storage or the Toshiba. For my use, it probably wouldn't make a difference. I ended up with the MacBook Air. I ordered it from MacMall by telephone on 8/15 by FedEx 2nd Day and received it 8/17 afternoon. That is fast for Hawaii. I unboxed it and connected to my home wifi network with no incident. I elected to not transfer my iMac contents to the MBA because of all the junk on the iMac and the limited storage on the MBA.
This thing is fast. Download times are way faster than my 3.06 core two duo iMac. Contrary to some other reviews, I find the keyboard has a good feel and is very satisfactory. I knew what the display size was going to be like before I ordered. It is crisp and easy to read the text. There are many resolution choices so you can pick text and window size. The full screen option is handy to get the maximum window. The display isn't quite as good as my iMac but it is close. The speakers are small and the base isn't very strong, as is expected. I have found no distortion. If you listen to music alot, you probably want to use better speakers.
The build quality and appearance is typical Apple. It is a beautiful and very functional machine. I am still learning the differences with Lion but, as with all Apple OS upgrades, it is a continuation and improvement on the previous OS system.
For me, the biggest draw is the complete mobility of this computer. It just easily goes with you and is a full functioning laptop computer. The only thing you give up is screen size and I don't find that a real disadvantage. I have had no second thoughts on the size or configuration of the MBA I chose. If you choose it as your only computer, you might want to have a bigger display at home. |

Reviewed by Nate (2011-08-26) Best laptop I've ever owned...By reading other reviewers here and other sites I knew that buying this computer probably wouldn't be a bad decision, and figured that the Air was pretty fast - but I wasn't expecting anything too much over par. However, after owning it for a couple weeks now I can tell you... I was absolutely wrong. This machine will take it, and just absolutely gnaw through anything you can possibly throw at it that requires computing power, and do it FAST.
That said, if you own a thriving photography business and need to photoshop 20 different 50 mb TIFF files at a time, this machine is not for you. But if you're like me and (yes I do photoshop, on occasion), surf the internet, download hi-def movies, use iTunes frequently, and overall are more of a casual user with the occasional need for a super-computer... you won't be dissatisfied.
My machine will go from a cold start, to absolutely ready to type in a web address (while having already opened iTunes, iPhoto, Safari, Microsoft Word - as Lion re-opens your windows), in about 10 seconds. It's light, but built very durably as any MacBook owner would come to expect. The backlit keyboard is a much welcomed feature brought back from the first generation, and battery life is impressive considering the size. Overall - if you're on the edge... dive in. You won't regret buying (IMO) the greatest MacBook Apple has introduced. |
